Subject: [*] Auto-ftp QuicKeys.hqx
Hi!
After I saw the recent request regarding auto-ftp scripting I decided to
submit my currently used solution as a small contribution to the net.
Enclosed is a set of QuicKeys (now called "Shortcuts") that I use for
(mostly) automated ftp downloads from both info-mac and mac.archive.
Consider it a working prototype; modify as needed. See the enclosed text
file for details.
Requirements:
- QuicKeys 3.0 (need the conditional branch features)
- BBEdit (I use version 2.2.2)
the shortcuts could be easily modified for another grep-able editor;
(I guess Nisus would be ok, Adam :-)
- Fetch (I use version 2.1.1)
- Mac hooked up to the Internet one way or another; I use MacPPP via modem
(otherwise ftp won't work quite as well :-)
- Patience connecting to info-mac or mac.archive via ftp ;-)
I would enjoy getting e-mail from people who use this little hack. Please
let me know if you come up with useful improvements!
Enjoy,
Klaus

Subject: [*] BBEdit extension Speaking & it's problems
Revisions 1.2.1:
* Change all NewHandle() calls to use BBEdit's callback-Allocate() calls.
* Free memory allocated when error occures when unable to allocating
speech channel.
* #ifdef StackDebug code to check stack space problem (OS Error 28).
>I can't get your Speaking BBEdit to work with BBEdit Lite 2.3.1.
I have fix the problems with error code -244 - voice not available
(I now use the 1st voice if female voice is not available).
error code -240 is just that Speech manager is not installed or you have
not restarted since you installed it.
error code -241 is synth can't open up for some reason - memory?
NOTE: I have been unable to fix the following problems:
1) Due to some unknow reason the sound manger requires more stack space
than is available with BBEdit This causes system crashes with error ID 28 -
stack has entered the application heap.
Results of my debugging last night:
- initial stack space is around 23,000 bytes when the module is first called,
- as text to sound is initially being processed the stack space goes down
to less then 4000 bytes,
(monitored via Speech Manager's Word callback routine).
- once the sound is playing the stack space goes back up to 23,000 bytes,
if it gets that far.
(My guess is Async interrupt routine used by speech manager is using
lot's of stack space).
As a result, I don't know if I will be able to fix it, does anyone know how
to fix it?
2) The callback routine that allows me to hilight the word currently being
spoken does not update the screen if it has to scroll the text into the
window. The only way I was able to force an update is to do a cut/paste
operation to the file!
I have try it with BBEdit V2.2.1 and BBEdit Lite V2.3.1 same bugs on LC
III's (System 7.1, 12M RAM) and Macintosh IIci (System 7.0.1, 8M ram).
The Centris 650 (System 7.1 + AppleScript, 24M RAM) - Stack bug does not
show up on the Centris 650 but the usage is still high and dangerlessly
low.
I will try to find time to create a TeachText type XTND capable program for
speaking word processing files in the next few weeks. If you know how to
fix the program, let me know, I have included the source code with some
#ifdef around stack debugging code. Enclosed is v1.21.
>How do you install it?
You place the file "Speaking" into the BBEDit extension folder and restart
BBEdit, the modules names will appear under the "Extensions" menu in
BBEdit.
> Do you paste the resources into the application with ResEdit?
no... no resEdit is not needed.

Subject: [*] LanTest 1.0.3 - File Server Performance Evaluation Tool
LanTest is an utility designed to test file server performance in a Macintosh
environment. It tests the following operations:
* Creating 100 files of 20kb each
* Opening and closing 100 files.
* Remove 100 files.
* Write 3 Mb to a file.
* Read 3 Mb from a file.
* Lock and unlock 4000 records.
* Read a directory containing 320 entries.
The utility can perform a mixture of these tests using a given number
of times and display the timings as well as an average. All results are
written into an ASCII logfile as well. The utility will count the
number of concurrently running LanTest programs in the current zone, if
not all of these test the same server the number of users displayed
might be misleading.
As all benchmarks, the results must be interpreted carefully and all test
parameters should be documented together with the results.

Having FETCHed Eric Behr's outstanding notes on how to set up and use
MacTCP on the Macs, I decided to pretty the document up in Word, so I
could distribute it to my local users. Attached below you'll find my
results.
This is based on version 1.2.1 of the MAC-TCP.TXT document found on
Eric's home base, spider.math.ilstu.edu. It has been formatted with
the Arial font, on Word 5.1a and paginated on standard U.S. Letter
paper with a 1" margin all around with the Apple LaserWriter 8.0 driver.
If you need to readjust these settings, beware that you'll have to
recompile the table of contents to resync the page numbers with reality.
The document content has not been changed in any way (nor updated, for
that matter) other than substituting graphic entities as appropiate
(such as inserting bullets, non-breaking spaces, etc.)
Enjoy,
Juan

Subject: [*] monitorswitch-11.cpt
Monitor Switch 1.1
Monitor Switch is an application for the Macintosh which allows you to
switch resolutions on your multisync monitor without the hassle of
changing the cable that is connected to the built-in video. It is
similar to DPI-on-the-fly and Radius Resolutions; but it is compatible
with more Macintosh models, allows switching to more resolutions, and
is more compatible with other software (it is an application rather
than an INIT/CDEV, and it doesn't patch any traps).
Monitor Switch is known to work with any multisync monitor on the
following Macintosh computers:
LC III
Centris 610
Centris 650
Quadra 700
Quadra 800
Quadra 900
Quadra 950
It should also work with the following computers, although no monitor
settings files are available for them in this release:
Centris 660AV
Quadra 840AV
Some PowerBooks
Some DuoDocks

Subject: [*] narrow21-101.cpt
Narrow21 1.0.1
Narrow21 is a system extension for the Macintosh which makes the display
from your built-in video appear narrower at the normal Macintosh 21-inch
resolution of 1152 by 870. If your display appears too wide for your monitor
and/or is shifted off to the left at the 21-inch resolution, then give this
program a try.
Narrow21 has significant advantages over the similar system extension which
comes with the E-Machines T16II monitor. Narrow21 works on the newer
Macintoshes, is more compatible with other software (doesn't patch any
traps), uses less memory and less processing time, and functions correctly
in more situations (for instance, after exiting MacsBug).
Narrow21 currently works on the following Macintosh computers:
Centris 610
Centris 650
Quadra 700
Quadra 800
Quadra 900
Quadra 950
Monitors which are known to benefit from this software (there may be others
as well) include the following:
E-Machines T16II
MAG MX-17S
Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 17"
If you find any other monitors which require Narrow21 in order to use the
21-inch resolution, please indicate the manufacturer and model of your
monitor on your registration form.

SpeakTextFiles version 1.0.1
by Rune Lindman 25 sept 1993
What it is:
ReadTextFiles is a simple program I wrote to try out the Speech Manage
which was recently released by Apple. It lets you have the computer read
text files for you. This is possible thanks to Apple's new Speech Manager.
Requirements:
System 7.0 or later.
Apple Speech Manager.
MacinTalk 2 or MacinTalk Pro.
Speech Manager and MacinTalk can be obtained from Apple's FTP-site.
stdTTS extension for the speech settings dialog. It can be found on the
Apple FTP-site.
Directory at Apple FTP-site (ftp.apple.com):
SpeechManager: /dts/mac/sys.soft/speech
stdTTS: /dts/mac/sys.soft/quicktime/sample.code/specch-media-handler.hqx
How to use:
Once you have installed the Speech Manager, you can simply drop text
files (pure TEXT and TeachText documents) on the SpeakTextFiles icon
or double click on the icon to select a file to speak. To pause speech,
press and hold "P", press "C" to continue. Pressing "S" stops current
speech.

Dear colleagues:
Several recent postings have asked about the availability of a list of the
system error codes displayed in the dreaded bomb-box or "<application> has
unexpectedly quit" dialog. The enclosed ErrorCodeDA is a handy magic decoder
ring put together by Bill Steinberg which I've been using for a couple years.
Click the "About..." button at the bottom of the screen for information about
the author and extensive help on how to customize the "DisplayDA" shell for
other applications. As mentioned in the help, DisplayDA is freeware for
non-commercial applications.
I don't know if this DA is System-7 compatible. Would also appreciate hearing
of any newer versions of this nifty utility. (This is my first attempt at
posting; I'd welcome constructive criticism to <sholmes@netrix.com>.)

Subject: $99 modem: I'm going for it!
A few weeks ago I noticed the TCI 14.4 kbaud modem sale at MacWarehouse. It
seemed too good to be true, so I queried about it here. Meanwhile my roommate
had his Intel modem sent here, and when it arrived we found out that we didn't
have the right connector. I asked about a connector here. The responses
indicated I'd have to shell out $10-25 to use his modem. Since the responses
about the TCI modem have generally been good, I decided to take the plunge and
on Saturday I dropped the order form in the mail. I'll submit an update in
about a week (figure roughly one week for them to deliver and a few days to
get it up and running).
Thanks to all who have helped me with this purchasing decision.

<I plan on using FAXstf with the 14.4k TCI modem from MacWarehouse. Does

<the chip set selection (driver). Also, does this combination work well?
Here's a post from tdy@dweebus.telemax.com (Thomas D.Halter) found on one of
last week's Info-Mac issues reguarding your question:
"Just for giggles, I tried using my copy of FAX/stf with the LineLink with
the TCI modem. It took a little trial and error, since I didn't know which
chipset the 144e uses, and the 144e is not in the list of supported modems.
I finally got it to work with "PN2388 Rockwell RC9624AT" setting."
I haven't tried to send a fax with FAX/stf yet (actually, I'm gonna get
around to it tonight), but I am routinely experiencing 1300-1700 cps data
transfers. I AM having a bit of trouble with the 144e picking-up line-noise.
The 144e picks-up a local radio station! I don't know if a higher quality,
high speed modem would have the same trouble (figures, I probably live in a
high-frequency vortex or somethin':-) ) but it has caused me lots of grief
tracking down the source of the line-noise. Overall, it's a decent modem
given the price.
Hope this helps.

Abstract.
--------
At-Your-Service 1.0 is a HyperCard communications package that -
provides a toolkit for installing self contained communications
capabilities into new or existing stacks. The installed facilities provide
a fast, simple and secure way of launching multiple, simultaneous
communication sessions.
is based upon Apple's Communications Toolbox technology, consequently
connectivity is only limited by the range of Connection and Terminal
Emulation tools that are available on your machine.
(N.B. The package comes bundled with a public domain TCP/IP/telnet tool
and Apple's VT102 terminal emulation tool).
includes 'communications' extensions to HyperCard's scripting language
(HyperTalk) to provide a powerful communications scripting facility.
The package is designed around the concept of a 'service', which is
defined as any process running on a local or remote computer, eg. an
Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) or a Campus Wide Information System
(CWIS). A service is uniquely defined via a series of 15 parameters that
describe attributes such as the name, service type, the method used to
connect to the service, the login and logout scripts, etc.
The hub of the package is the AYS Installer stack that is responsible for
maintaining service definitions by providing facilities for creation,
storage and testing. As the name implies the stack is also responsible
for installing/removing definitions into/from other stacks, therefore
enabling the creation of custom built communication stacks or the addition
of communications facilities to existing stacks.
Installed service definitions allow for multiple, simultaneous sessions to
be active at any one time. A typical session might therefore include a
serial connection to your local OPAC in one window, whilst another window
displays information from a CWIS, and a third displays a remote network
connection to a second OPAC.
The second stack included with the package, the AYS Example stack is a
stand-alone communications 'application' that is intended both as an
example of what can be achieved as well as a useful, ready-to-use utility.

Subject: Astound is Astoundingly Bad
Turn on the jets, here comes the flame!
*****Flame On********
I purchased Gold Disk's Astound 1.0, presentation software. Astound got good
reviews in both MacWorld and MacUser. After having suffered through a week
of major problems with the software, I feel that it's time to warn the net
that this is software that is not ready for prime time.
Astound very bug ladden. It's worse than beta. It will not save a presentation
without crashing. Astound reports: "Error -43. File not found trying
to save." (I suppose that means something, but it's a bit weird to
me.) The next thing that happens is a crash to MacsBug (bus error)
and a type 1 error from Finder. According to Gold Disk technical
support, I needed to convert all my graphics to PICTS (I thought they
already were) and eliminate any empty placeholders that Astound
created when it imported my presentation (Huh?) and purge all
my resources. (Okay, if you insist.) A major job indeed, just to
use an imported file that is theoretically supported by Astound!
Well I did all that and the damn software still crashes--even with all
extensions out of the picture. Save as... seems to work for some
crazy reason, however.
Astound will not operate from a file server, even if the application runs
locally. (Gold Disk says their working on this. Ah ha.)
It took a 152K PowerPoint presentation and turned it into a 678K
Astound presentation even before any changes were made!
If that wasn't bad enough, after fighting with Astound for a week
(I thought software was supposed to help the user--oh well), I finally
managed to save a complete presentation (version 12 or something like
that). Now the damn thing won't show any of the last seven slides.
It just hangs and must be killed with System 7 bailout keys.
I know that it is possible that I'm at fault. It is also likely
that 32 people on the net will send me e-mail saying that they've
used Astound without any problems for the last year. But as for
me, I've had it! I'm going back to PowerPoint! :-(
******* End of flame and end of message ********
Obviously, these opinions do not represent my employer.

Subject: BOOTP & RARP with MacTCP
The answer to your question is not unfortunately very simple.
1.FINDING AN IP ADDRESS BY MACTCP AT STARTUP
MacTCP will find its IP address at startup with two protocols RARP and
BOOTP. Both of these protocols however are restricted to the local network,
since they are basically 'cries for help' which would swamp the network if
propogated.
Thus if you are running MacTCP with a Ethertalk as opposed to an Ethernet
connection then either a local Mac or the router must respond. To my
knowledge neither RARP nor BOOTP is supported by anything but unix
workstations. Some appletalk routers will give out IP addresses dynamically
under ethertalk, but this is a different protocol, and won't consistently
give the same address to the same machine. My local appletalk expert
disabled this feature on our Webster Multigates because it caused a lot of
problems. I don't know about the Gator of Fastpath.
a. RARP (reverse address resolution protocol)
If however you are running MacTCP on Ethernet, and share the network with a
unix host then you can use RARP quite easily. Just find the ethernet
address of the mac (opt-click on Ethernet in MacTCP) and enter this into
the /etc/ethers (or equiv) database.
b.BOOTP is a superior method as it can also supply routing information and
netmasks to MacTCP. There is a big catch not mentioned in the MacTCP
reference which I stumbled on by chance. MacTCP will do a RARP request
before trying BOOTP, if it gets a response then it will not try BOOTP. If
you want BOOTP to work you must remove the mac's details from the RARP
daemon. BOOTP is supported by some unix hosts directly (not Sun), but is
available under anonymous FTP.
[Personally I use it to configure a Duo which when docked is on ethernet,
but otherwise is connected via ARA. This is the only solution I have.]
2. NAMING OF APPLETALK ZONES
A very black art indeed. This is normally enforced by the router, but once
it starts propogating the information it is nigh on impossible to ammend
it. I believe from a report by Wolfgang Naegeli <wnn@ornl.gov> that their
is even a working group studying this problem at the moment!
Hope this helps,
Matthew.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Akimbo Systems Ships FullWrite 1.7;
Announces FullWrite 2 Upgrade Pricing
(September 22, 1993, SOMERVILLE, MA) ... Akimbo Systems announced today that
it is shipping FullWrite 1.7, an interim upgrade to the FullWrite word
processor for the Macintosh computer.
The upgrade addresses an incompatibility with the Quadra and Centris
Macintosh systems, which had prevented FullWrite from being run if the 68040
processor cache was enabled, said Kelly Moutsos, FullWrite Product Manager.
In addition, the upgrade fixes an incompatibility with System 7 that caused
the Set Margins dialog to disappear, Moutsos added.
The FullWrite 1.7 upgrade is available free of charge to owners of
FullWrite 1.5 or higher and costs $20 to owners of prior FullWrite versions.
A $7.50 shipping and handling charge applies. A dedicated toll-free number
has been created to take orders for FullWrite 1.7 only. Users wanting this
upgrade may phone 1-800-375-6515.
Owners of FullWrite 1.5s may opt to upgrade to FullWrite 1.7 by making
use of a converter, which may be downloaded from online services. The
converter is available in the FullWrite support forum on America Online, and
soon on Compuserve.
FullWrite 2 Upgrade Pricing Announced
Ms. Moutsos also stated that the FullWrite 2 upgrade, which is scheduled
to ship in the first quarter of 1994, will be priced at $99. Users paying $20
to upgrade to FullWrite 1.7 will be credited this amount when upgrading to
FullWrite 2. This pricing effectively means that the FullWrite 1.7 upgrade is
free of charge to all users who upgrade later to FullWrite 2.
FullWrite 1.7 runs on any Macintosh system having 2MB of memory or more
under System 6, or 4MB of memory or more under System 7. 1MB of hard disk
space is required (3MB is recommended).

It is possible to install a disk drive light on almost any
Mac at the risk of voiding your warranty. Look at the
"front" of a SCSI hard disk mechanism (the side
opposite SCSI and power connections). There are two small
pins on the disk printed circuit board. On my Quantum 105
they are labelled "LT". About 1/8 in long and as thick as
this "l". Plug in a standard low power green or red LED;
I cannibalized one from an old HD but radio shack has them.
Drill small hole in Mac case at a convenient spot, then tape LED
to hole and carefully replace case. Note that only mounted
(IE diode in a socket with two iwres terminating in female
plugs) will work. Looks pretty good on my LC- I just enlarged the
existing hole to the right of the (unused)second floppy bay.

Well, money always helps <grin>. Actually, I kinda chuckled when I saw it.
Means that Intel is running scared.
In reality, they do have a grasp of one thing in the move from MC680x0 CISC
chips to PowerPC RISC--it is a major change which is certain to burn some
bridges and the hands which cling to them. Think of all the problems with
compatibility that arose just by stepping up in the 680x0 series--now
multiply that by ten (which, BTW, is what *I* think Apple should be naming
the PowerPC Macs instead of four-digit-numbered Quadras--"raise your level
of computing to the power of Ten").
Intel is taking a chance that they can convince people to choose *their*
new processor over Motorola's--"If you are going to switch processors
anyway, why not pick ours?" Intel may even be hoping that, when faced with
the estimates for upgrading existing software to versions that work with
the PowerPC (either fixing incompatibilities with the 680x0 emulation or to
full native code versions) that some users may prefer to start over from
scratch. They may even get some converts--if that is what best fits the
particular user's needs then that is what they should do.
And, in general, the fact that Intel is trying to lure Mac owners away from
PowerPC *is* a Mac-related item. Of course, considering that MacUser was
one of the chickens that censored the Global Village ad, I do think they
should have done the same to Intel's--run the ad but cover up the possibly
offensive parts (Intel's logo, etc.) <grin>.

Does it exist something (application, control panel or extension)
which could be named "NameExtend" or "BigName" or BallonsName
or anything else which could do the jog I describe below?
Let me explain what I mean.
I work in a research laboratory. Suppose, a nice day, I finally
decide to do a big job! I adjust the lasers, set up all amplifiers,
digital storage scopes... prepare samples ..etc.. and turn on my
Mac to do acquisition of datas. During that day I record, say, 50
different signals. I can name it signal_01, signal_02, signal_03
... ... ... signal_49, signal_50; and with a pencil and paper, note
that signal_01 has been recorded under this and that particular
conditions, temperature, power of laser etc etc etc ... and so on for
signal_02 through signal_50. But why pencil and paper, I have a
computer at hand! Here is my problem! I cannot write it in the name
of the icon, there is not enough space. Nor I can write it in "comments",
it will be erased when I rebuild the desktop, and there to there is
not very much space and it is not simple and fast to open and read.
What I have to do is to write a small TeachText document for each
signal, name it signal_xy_info, put it with signal_xy_data in a folder
named signal_xy. It work, it is clean but imagine the job when come
the time to browse in it to find a particular signal!
What would be beautiful would be something which could put an on-off
buttons in the menu bar, or a button on each icons or something else,
simple and fast like depression of a key which produce, when you put
the mouse on the icon, the appearance of a window (like ballon's help
for example) and the collapse of that window and the appearance of
the next window when you go to the next icon. Evidently it should be
possible to, with a simple command, to maintain that window open
to copy, paste and write in it. Is it a dream?
If someone know something which can do that or if someone
find it is a good idea for producing a shareware, please let me know!
I don't have time and knowledge now to do it by myself, I work on
a hard research project!!!
I hope someone in the whole world could save my life !!!!!!!
Thank you very (very) much !

I am all in favor of using the features of System 7 *when they are
relevant*,
but there is no reason why such a simple utility should be System 7
dependent.
This is simply a poor design decision. Even though I have System 7, I will
be sticking with an older concatenation utility that has no such
limitations.

To reset the power manager, first move the battery disconnect switch down,
then hold down both the interrupt and reset buttons on the side

and power up.
I also need to add here kudos to the techs at 1 800 SOS APPL. This is the

Subject: Personal LaserWriter LS (Q)
I'm having problems printing out graphics with my Personal LW LS. Given a
non-color image, the printing comes out blocky and lo-res. (Stylewriters
print
out the files just fine and with curves instead of small staircases.) I've
tried the three latest versions of the printer driver, and they all print the
same.
I've tried printing non-color, downloaded GIFs with NIH Image, GIFConverter,
SuperPaint, and even MSWord. They all give the same quality printing:
mediocre. (I even tried printing the same image in different formats, namely
PICT and TIFF.) Now the neat thing is that if I use MacDraw Pro and make some
Bezier curves, _those_ all come out smooth. Also, text comes out fine. It's
just graphics that give me a problem. My guess is that it's the printer
driver's fault, but I have no way of checking. Maybe there's some esoteric
setting that I'm skipping over? Does anybody know what's going on? Thanks
much for any info.

Subject: Philosophy Font (R)
Roderick Moore asks about fonts with logic symbols (presumably other than
those in Symbol). Assuming they have to be TrueType or Type 1, I know of
three options, apart from getting Fontographer or such and rolling your
own.
(1) The logic program MacLogic comes with a logic font "Konstanz" in TT and
Type 1 formats. It contains a variety of symbols including the Girard set.
To obtain MacLogic send e-mail to rd%cs.st-and.ac.uk@nsfnet-relay.ac.uk
(Roy Dyckhoff). I think rd@cs.st-and.ac.uk will also work. (No doubt other
logic programs offer something similar.)
(2) The most comprehensive symbol collection is the superset of the AMS set
that comes with the Lucida package from Y&Y. The academic discount price is
$160 (approx). You get a lot for the money - a serif and a sans serif
family, the NewMath family, fax, typewriter, calligraphy fonts and so on.
Warning: Nisus does not print the NewMath fonts correctly. The fault seems
to be Nisus's, since everything else does (ok, I haven't checked
*everything*; but there's no problem with Word, FrameMaker, Quark,
PageMaker; and in Nisus, peculiar PS commands show up in the output to the
printer). Y&Y: 800-742-4059, fax 508-371-2004.
(3) Adobe has a collection called Mathematical Pi, if I recall correctly. I
think I once determined that it isn't as comprehensive as the Y&Y package,
but I've forgotten the details.
Hope this helps.
Graeme Forbes
Admission of bias: I wrote a textbook called Modern Logic using the Y&Y
fonts (and a 4M) for crc. But if you want to see what they look like you'll
have to wait until OUP's publication date in November. The book is designed
to work with MacLogic.

I have had the same kinds of problems with my PowerBook 100. I think it is
related to a bad SCSI chip. Whenever I have the problem, I plug an empty
SCSI cable into my PowerBook, and the hard disk usually comes right up.

This behavior has more than passing similarities to what I began encountering
on my SE/30 recently. Whenever I insert an empty floppy in the FDHD drive, up
comes the message asking to initialize. If permitted, the initialization
proceeds aborts on the verge of completion.
I took the machine in to the closest FRIENDLY dealer, who went through the
Following:
Attempt 1, replaced the floppy, but to no avail
Attempt 2, ordered a new logic board, whose installation created a new set of
problems which prevented a testing of the original problem
Attempt 3, ordered yet another logic board, and all problems were eliminated.
Before I threw in the towel I posted an account of my tribulations to the
list,
requesting some guidance as to the ACTUAL cause of the problem (merely
knowing that changing the logic board eliminates the problem doesn't really
tell me anything as to the cause!). The several responses I had had one thing
in common: a referral to Larry Pina's book *Mac Classic and SE Repair and
Upgrade Secrets*.

Subject: StyleWriter II on a Plus
Hello all. I'm going to rely on the power of the net for a third question.
Simple task - connecting a StyleWriter II to a Plus 2.5/170HD.
Not so simple result. Systems tried : 6.0.7 / 6.0.8 / 7.1 minimal
Net result : the chooser will not let me actually choose the port
it just "flashes" when clicked on...doesn't stay lit.
Therefore, the printer is not "seen" by the plus.
Qualifiers. My PB 180 works FINE with the stylewriter. The SCSI HD was
reformated about 5 times using various insundry devices (Hammer HDT,
Micronet, Mac SpotON from MacPeak which came with the drive which is from
MegaHaus in shows up as a Quantum 170 SCSI 2 drive...which DOES seem to
work with the plus despite the SCSI 2 classification) Stylewriter install
was either done from the regular 4-disk Apple install of version 1.0, or
from version 1.2 and also via drag and dropping pieces manually from both
versions.
I'm young, I'd like to maintain most of the hair on my head...so please
reply soon so I might stop pulling chunks out over this problem.
Thanks

Subject: Sys 7.1 Bootable Floppy and Norton
Thanks to all who responded. The dirt simple thing I missed was to change
the type and creator to match that of the Finder - type: FNDR, creator: MACS.
There is also another way, which is perhaps more correct, but more
involved. Start with a copy of the Disk Tools disk. Remove everything but
the
System file and the application, which should be left at the root level of the
disk. Using a handy disk editor, edit the finder name in the boot blocks to
be
the name of the application. The easiest way I know to do this is to use the
Disk Editor that is part of the Norton Utilities. The application name cannot
exceed 15 characters, and the byte immediately proceeding the finder name must
contain, in hex, the length, in bytes, of the name. I guess the advantage to
this is method is that it preserves the original application icon instead of
disguising it as the Finder, which could be confusing.
Thanks again!

Greetings & Salutations:
I wonder if anyone out there in netland has had any experience with
video editing hardware & software on the macintosh. I am not talking
about merely creating QT movies; I mean editing real raw footage (in
both VHS & Betacam SP format) and printing out a finished product to

I have read some information about Radius's VideoVision DigitalMedia

Cost is an issue -- less than $10,000 would be nice.
In case you were wondering, I am using a Centris 650 8/230 CD, built

I will post a summary of replies to the net.

Perhaps users ought to post a letter to MacUser's "Letters to the

because they paid them.... remember that the purpose of any print publication

Heck, there was an intel ad on page 16(?) of the 10/4/93 MacWEEK. It was a
